The 224th issue of MOJO goes on sale next week and features The Beatles, The Stone Roses, Paul Simon, Kraftwerk, Richard Hawley, Regina Spektor, Nina Simone, Jimmy Cliff and a farewell to the late, great Levon Helm. And there’s more…much more. Here it is!
MOJO Rising: Willis Earl Beal
Origin: Chicago, US.
MOJO says: “With his rudimentary instrumentation and lyrics about depression and robots, parallels could be drawn with Jandek and Daniel Johnston but Beal’s vocals shift from Screamin’ Jay Hawkins wails to the lo-fi R&B melancholy of Cody ChestnuTT, while his clattering snaketimes rhythms summon up the ghosts of Moondog and Sun Ra, taking things to another level entirely.”
Current release: Debut album, Acousmatic Sorcery, is out now on Hot Charity/ XL

Mick Jagger, Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters and Jeff Beck appear on the Saturday Night Live season finale (May 19, 2012).
Robin Gibb, 1949 - 2012. The Bee Gee brother has died at the age of 62. MOJO flags fly at half mast.

Currently awaiting confirmation, but reports suggest that Donna Summer died this morning at the age of 63. Such sad news if it’s true.
MOJO Rising: Diagrams
Origin: UK
MOJO says: “Glinting architectural pop outfit Diagrams is led by erstwhile Tunng frontman Sam Genders. Debut album, Black Light, was recorded by Genders and former Chakk and Moloko bassist-turned producer Mark Brydon with a shifting pool of collaborators including Fever Ray’s Peder Mannerfelt and singer-instrumentalists Hannah Peel and Micachu. It’s often vertiginously arranged, brass-infused songs recall everyone from Hot Chip and Metronomy to Arthur Russell and Can. ”
Current release: Debut album Black Light is out now on Full Time Hobby.
